Kimberly Marler, Seattle Times; Wed., April 3, 2012. She must be a busy, multitasking woman. She's working, she's running errands, she's doing housework for her kids, she's watching them play outside. But her mind never stops running, never stops planning, never stops calculating the odds.
She is… the gambler.
Kimberly Marler is that kind of gambler. She bets everything she's got on her poker face. But just as much as she likes to play, she doesn't like losing.
Kimberly, who uses only one name professionally, is a local poker pro, a winner. She has seven career WSOP cashes and her biggest score came last year, when she took down the World Poker Tour Championship in Los Angeles for $105,000.
But she also craves the opposite, the losing, the thrill of hitting bottom.
"It's very addictive," Kimberly said, "the feeling of crawling out of it, because it's like, 'Wow, I can't believe I fell so far.' And then you go back, and you're like, 'I am where I was.' That's the weird, addictive part. That's the part I love. "
She did it this week, playing the WSOP circuit for the first time since 2003. She lost. She nearly lost $25,000, and if the feeling hadn't been so delicious, the thought of it would have scared her.
"It's a little scary when you start, because you start putting everything on the line," she said. "I put everything I own on the line, and there's nothing I can do about it."
Then she won, a lot.
She won enough to cover her losses and take home $18,000. But all that money is still in her pocket, and she said she'll be just as willing to take another chance in the coming weeks.
"It's not just getting lucky," she said. "You just have to have a little bit of luck. And then it can go one way, and then you'll go the other way. You just need that one roll of the dice." ac619d1d87
